Introduction
The First Entry
My name is Caitlyn Gass and I am one half of this project and blog. Here you will find all things process work behind our cumulative project for the next three months, with sketches, monologues, and everything in between.
There is a lot of pressure for one of the very first blog posts, so here is what I got into for the week!
Sustainable Fashion Meets Design

From the very beginning, I wanted to look into an issue around education and women's rights. While brainstorming what topics related to it, I landed on fashion! Katherine was also leaning toward the rising issue of fast fashion and so we decided to pair up and start ideating how this project could manifest.
Brainstorming what we wanted our final semester project to be, I did a deep dive into academic essays and studies around sustainable fashion. These resources let me start to create what I am calling a "case analysis", and an infographic. I kept the graphics simple and focused more on the information I was including. My goal was for people to read this document and understand why we are going in the direction we are. Katherine will cover more on the conclusion statement (the last part of this document) in her blog post. Throughout the process of research, it became more and more clear that there is a gap in education in Nova Scotia on sustainable fashion.

Process Work
Alongside everything, we have been keeping a private miro board with all and any information we find that could support our project. I attached a screenshot of one of the boards just full of our ideas.
The bonus to keeping a miro board is the visual proof of everything we have found and being able to access it all in one spot.

Inspiration
A lot of what made me want to dive into this topic and education is my own experience with craft and textiles in high school. It was a very formative part of my art-to-design journey and melding the two fields seems fitting.
I included a screenshot of an apron I created in grade 12 as an example of the work I have done in the textile field.
Reading of the Week
For my process blog, I want to showcase an interesting reading every week. Not only as proof of my continuation of research but for others to also see something you might not have seen! This week will be on an article by Cainz, which you can read here.
Written by Melanie Suriarachchi, Melanie makes a great point to mention how much micro-trends are affecting the overconsumption of clothing and why that is so dangerous.
"Previously, the pillars of the fashion industry and trend-making fell to the season in which we were in, (i.e. Spring/Summer Season and the Autumn/Winter Season), however, with the nature of social media and the precariousness of the pandemic, micro-trends have been a ‘trend’ of their own."
Implications for The Future
Melanie brought up a good point here that social media plays a large role in the new ways we see trends immerging in fashion. This made me consider if we were to try and educate young adults and teens on slow fashion, how could we combat what they see every day online? It is a good article to consider from a business perspective what is influencing the fashion world and mass consumption.
QOTD: Have you heard about sustainable fashion?
Yes, I am passionate about this topic.
No, but I want to!
No, it is not interesting to me.
