Finalizing Details

Updated: Mar 7, 2023

This week was put on a halt for me because I've been sick for the entire week, however, I've been slowly chipping away at different tasks from the comfort of my bed, and will catch you up on just that!

Process

One of the things we did was continue to work on our name for the project. Katherine started a mind map and I added to it. We both really liked the term mend, as that is what our goal is. We want to mend people's relationships with clothing. So from that mindmap, I looked at different clothing terms that would fit well with mend, and I vibe with "matter" the most. I was looking for alliteration as well when trying name combinations.

Another part of the project I updated further was the design brief. Unfortunately, as I have been sick, and we had a snowstorm we haven't been able to meet with Hu and get an outside opinion of it. I updated it with the text Katherine wrote and started to stylize it some more.

Reading Of the Week

On the topic of our name Mending Matter being marketable, a quick Google search showed a book already exists with this name, specifically about mending clothing. So something to consider when moving forward, however, I think it proves it works well for the subject.

The reading is not available online but a preview is online on Google here.

The book seems quite interesting and I requested it from the NSCAD library so that I could read it further. An interesting quote from the book I read was:

Most of us typically think of mending as a chore - something to minimize, streamline, or avoid so we can focus on more urgent, essential, or enjoyable tasks. Yet mending transformed into an art form as soon as I realized the opportunity to consider patches and stitches as design elements.

Next Steps...

My next steps will be to finish the design brief and start ideation on the actual project.
