Developing A Draft

This week was a complete grind mode for our project. We started all of our first drafts and further exploration on a logo. I mainly focused on filling out a workshop development plan for the other part of the Mending Matters Service as in-class activities.

The Logo is still being worked on, and probably will be for the next week. I included some of my sketches and exploration of the wordmark. I wanted to focus on playing with our existing header font and how it could morph the name into something that draws on textile imagery, sewing thread or needles, and stitch patterns.

Below is the latest sketch and current idea I am working on.

Alongside that, I started to break down the workshop agenda and what we would present to the teens in class. On average a high school class is an hour long so I broke up the exercise into 15-minute increments. I wrote out a base outline and will add further details after feedback.

Reading of the Week

I was looking for more statistics that I would be able to add to our first draft of the guide, and I was able to find a 2018 document called "Advancing Textile Waste Diversion in Nova Scotia" which you can read here.

It is a very in-depth document that covers everything from a closed-loop economy around clothes, existing programs, and their recommendations for new programs based on other provinces' initiatives.

The document actually starts off by stating one of the most pressing recommendations is, "Increase public awareness about the value of textiles through innovative public education about the benefits of textile diversion from landfills.

An interesting quote from the study reads as follows,

"Improve definitions of textile reuse and textile recycling. By using contemporary definitions to educate the public/householder/industry, individuals can decipher basic terms and begin to understand the facts and realities associated with textile waste and the critical need for its diversion. In addition to textiles, shoes and handbags need to be included in this emerging common language."

They specifically mention the need for language to change and be more consistent. I think we should use this insight when writing our text descriptions in our guide, and make sure the language is consistent all around.

Next Steps...

My next steps are to keep chipping away at our drafts alongside Katherine, hopefully getting to speak to Hu on next Tuesday.
